Drugs anyone?

There is a gang dealing drugs one block from our house. Most days they start at about 10PM and continue until the next morning. Sometimes it’s ten people, other times it’s over one hundred according to my neighbor who lives on E3rd Street and watches all of this drug and prostitution activity happen right outside his front door. My guess is that these people moved their operation from 12th and Chicon to Brushy Street between 3rd and 4th Street. How is this allowed to happen in a mostly residential area?

Things that I plan on doing to combat this activity…

  • Call 911 anytime I see suspicious activity.
  • Host a Neighborhood Night Out on October 5th to get the neighbors out and increase awareness.
  • Collect contact information from my neighbors and share those details in summary so that we can improve communication in the area.

This could happen in your neighborhood too if you aren’t paying attention. Do you know your neighbors? Could you call them if you needed help?

Yesterday, I needed help carrying a piece of glass into the house and John wasn’t going to be home for another couple of hours. I debated doing it myself then decided that I was going to ask for help from a neighbor. This caused me to knock on three different doors. The renters across the street never answer their door but I gave it a try any way. No luck. Crossed the street to Fred’s house two doors down but he wasn’t home. I did get to talk to his adorable granddaughters though! Then I debated which door to knock on next. I chose the house of the only other person whose name I knew on my block. Seven houses on my block and I only know the names of two people. That is shocking given that I have close to 500 Facebook friends. The third time was the proverbial charm. Bruce, who I haven’t spoken to since we moved into the house in March, was happy to help me in the rain. I’m declaring it here and now. I will know all of my neighbor’s names by the end of October!!

  1. Calling 911, getting the neighbors together and being diligent works. Our block on Garden has cleaned up significantly over the last year. I haven't seen the heroin users in a long time and the break-ins have stopped with incarceration of the problem child.

Odd thing last week happened...a group from Martin Middle School came down our alley. Happy, laughing, talking like any other day, but in a large group (20- 40 kids). Behind the empty lot they stop, get in a circle and get out cameras while two of them start pounding our each other. A middle school version of Fight Club. "911, Yes there is a group of 40 middle school kids fighting in my alley" = 4-6 cop cars chasing kids up and down Chalmers. And the response time is getting a whole lot better.

    Good luck with your block.
